Nachdem bereits zu alten Athlon "Thunderbird" Zeiten die Modifikation mit einem Bleistift oder Silberleitlack in Mode kam und diese zwischenzeitlich auch bei Grafikkarten Einzug hielt, scheinen nun auch die Chipsätze hiervor nicht mehr sicher zu sein.
Anandtech erhielt von DFI die beiden, bis auf die verbauten Chipsätze, baugleichen DFI LANparty UT nF4 Ultra-D und DFI LANparty UT nF4 SLI-D Mainboards. Nvidia hat in den aktuelleren Forceware Treibern die SLI-Funktionalität des normalen Nforce 4 Ultra-Chipsatzes deaktiviert, was sich nur mit Registryhacks umgehen lässt. Anandtech schaute sich die beiden Chipsätze genauer an und stellte fest, dass sie sich lediglich um einen geöffneten Widerstand unterscheiden.
Diesen Widerstand schloss man zunächst mit Silberleitlack(später auch mit einem Bleistift), was dazu führte, dass sich Board dem Forceware-Treiber als SLI-Chipsatz Mainboard zu erkennen gibt.
If you look closely at the pictures of the SLI and Ultra, you will see that the chipset themselves appear identical. However, a closer look at the resistors and pads surrounding the chip shows some differences. The resistors appear the same on both, but there are 3 sets of resistor pads that are closed on the SLI chipset while just two sets are closed on Ultra. The vertical set of resistor pads just to the right edge of the chip itself is closed on SLI and open on Ultra. We could find no other obvious differences in the 2 chipsets. Could it be this simple?
